Utah Democratic Party Chair Wayne Holland Announces Future Plans

Utah State Democratic Party Chair Wayne Holland announced today that he will devote his time and energy for political work to helping President Obama’s reelection campaign following the conclusion of his current and third term as Chair of the Party. Holland’s decision to forego a fourth term as Chair is based on his desire to return to activities involving national and regional politics.

Just months prior to his election as the Chair in 2005, Holland had spent much of the 2004 campaign organizing political activities in Western battleground states like Colorado and Arizona. Holland said, “The Rocky Mountain region has become fertile ground for Democrats at all levels, and I am looking forward to hitting the campaign trail once again. I am convinced that the higher voter turnout surrounding a Presidential campaign will have a positive impact on Democrats both in Utah and throughout the Western United States.” Holland said, “I’ll see everyone on the campaign trail.”

Wayne Holland (State Party Chair from 2005 until 2011) has provided stability to Utah Democratic leadership and is among the longest serving Democratic Party Chairs in Utah history joining John Klas (1968-1976) and Meg Holbrook (1997-2003) in serving three or more terms. There have been five State GOP Chairs during Holland’s terms in office including Joe Cannon, Enid Greene, Stan Lockhart, Dave Hansen and Thomas Wright.

Since taking office in 2005, Holland has been appointed to serve on the Democratic National Committee’s powerful Rules and Bylaws committee by DNC Chair Tim Kaine, and was recently elected to the DNC Executive Committee. Holland has helped the National Party implement DNC Chair Howard Dean’s “50 State Strategy” and DNC Chair Kaine’s “Organizing for America” in Utah.

Holland is well-known in political circles for his fundraising prowess and his unprecedented success in consistently out-raising the Utah Republican Party over the past two election cycles. He has increased the number of staff, the size and capabilities of the Party’s headquarters, and managed to take the Party successfully through the Great Recession that has been devastating to many non-profit organizations in Utah.

Under the leadership of Holland, Congressman Jim Matheson has won three re-elections, Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon was re-elected, nine of the 17 Democratic members of the State House were elected for the first time to their current State House seat, as were six of the seven Democratic members of the State Senate, and Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker was first elected to his current job. Democrats had their best showing in a U.S. Senate race in 18 years and a Presidential contest in 12 years with a majority of Utah voters in Salt Lake County supported a Democratic presidential candidate in 2008 for the first time since the 1960’s. At the high point Democrats briefly controlled the Salt Lake County Council for the first time in its short history, and there were 22 Democratic members of the State House. Women now make up the majority of Democrats elected to the legislature with 53% in the House and 57% in the Senate.

“Serving as Chairman of the State Party has been one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. The past six years have been eventful working on public policy issues like the school voucher fight, and building relationships with great leaders like Jim Matheson, Peter Corroon and Ralph Becker. I have to thank the United Steelworkers for providing me with the flexibility to do this work. I owe a debt of gratitude to the working men and women of Utah that are a part of organized labor. They were constantly in my thoughts as I tried to make a better community for all of us,” remarked Holland.

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker said, “Wayne has had incredible successes over the past six years. He has built a party infrastructure, which puts Utah Democrats on the right path for success in our future.”

Nikki Norton, State Director for the President’s grassroots organization Organizing for America said, “Wayne has been instrumental in the success of Organizing for America here in Utah. His support of the President has been unwavering – it has helped provide important resources to Utah candidates.”

The filing deadline for candidates for Democratic State Party office will be the “Call to Order” of the first county convention of the year. This is currently scheduled for April 19, 2011 at 5:30 PM with the commencement of the Washington County Democratic Party Organizing Convention. The Utah State Democratic Party will be selecting new officers -- including a Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer -- at the organizing convention to be held on July 16, 2011. The location has yet to be determined.

Davis County Democrats are excited and honored to announce that Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill will be the keynote speaker for the 2011 Davis County Democratic Party Convention on Saturday, May 7th at 10 a.m.

More on our keynote speaker, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill:

Before ousting single term D.A. Lohra Miller, Sim Gill was the Chief City Prosecutor for Salt Lake City, the largest municipal prosecutor’s office in the state of Utah. He has more than 15 years of prosecuting experience through the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office, Salt Lake City and Layton City. He has prosecuted in the areas of white collar crime, felony drunk driving, environmental crimes and the sexual exploitation for profit cases.

Sim graduated from the University of Utah with a B.A. degree in History and Philosophy. He played on the University of Utah football team from 1981-1983. He received his J. D. degree and certificate of specialization in Environmental and Natural Resources Law from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

Sim and his wife, Jamie Tabish, are the proud parents of a son and daughter Vikram and Anjali, and of course, their dachshund, Loki.

He is a big advocate of a systems approach to the issues of criminal and social justice, focusing on collaborative and community oriented approaches to problem solving.

And in 2006, Sim was a part of a team representing Salt Lake City that was recognized as one of the top three cities in the world for its work on criminal and social justice issues by the World Leadership Forum in London, England.

Jim Judd, President of the Utah AFL-CIO, will address the Davis County Democratic Breakfast Club this Saturday (March 12, 2011) on how the happenings in Wisconsin can impact us here in Davis County. Jim will also give an update on legislative issues and the 2011 session.

This monthly breakfast is held every on the second Saturday at Granny Annie's Restaurant located at 286 North 400 West in Kaysville, Utah.

Jim Judd Bio:

Jim has been a union man for more than 30 years, starting out with the Teamsters in the early 1970s in Las Vegas. In 1977, he joined the Ogden Fire Department and the local chapter of the International Association of Fire Fighters. Two years later, he was elected president of Local 1654. He has served as the Professional Fire Fighters of Utah president since 1985.
Twelve years ago, he joined the executive board of the Utah AFL-CIO. During that time, he worked on a number of labor issues. He has been a familiar face navigating the halls at the Utah legislature for numerous years lobbying on behalf of the working men and women of Utah.

Organizing for America and President Barack Obama has challenged Democrats all over the country to be mindful of public service. County Secretary Bev Dawson has taken that challenge to heart. Last month Bev said, "If we can't get elected we need to be the example."

Since then Bev has been diligently working to provide opportunities for Davis Democrats to serve their fellow Davis County Residents and that work made for a great event today when Davis Democrats from all over the county took two hours on Presidents' Day to serve the seniors at St. Mark's Gardens Senior Community.

Unfortunately, some of us had to work today but I was able to make a stop at St. Mark's Gardens long enough to see the fruit of Bev's work unfold.

When I arrived I saw Bev standing on the sidewalk with her clip board. She was standing by herself but before I could even get out of my car Bev was directing two volunteers to another apartment. As I started to walk up to Bev another volunteer, Curtis, walked up to Bev and told her he needed to go back to the apartment he was cleaning in twenty or thirty minutes to finish cleaning the oven. I asked if I could take a photo of Curtis and Bev and that is when I noticed that Curtis is probably four to five inches taller than I am. Having worked with senior communities I know that the ovens in these apartments are small and low to the ground, but I didn't see any discomfort in Curtis's face, only the glow of charity (Happiness) in his eyes.

I asked Bev to take me to several apartments where I had a chance to say hello to our volunteers and more importantly the seniors they were serving. In each apartment I saw smiling Democrats and smiling seniors who truly appreciated the assistance.

When one lady asked why we were doing this I explained that we had been challenged by President Barack Obama to do so, a truth that we presented at several of our visits. A truth that was met with smiles and appreciation.

As chair of the Davis County Democrats I am grateful to all the volunteers that made today's service project a great success. I am grateful for Bev's determination to get the job done. And, I am grateful for President Barack Obama's challenge and for our local OFA staffer, Nikki Norton Nelmark for providing our county party with a road map that will and is making a difference for Davis residents one step at a time.

LAYTON -- History is against them.

But don't tell that to what appears to be a "new brand" of Davis County Democratic candidates as they jockey for sign placement, spend to get their names out and deliver conservative political stands versus the left-of-center tilt Utah Democrats are often labeled with.

Democratic candidate Chris Williams, who is challenging Rep. Curt Oda, R-Clearfield, for House Seat 14 in the Nov. 2 general election, said he and fellow Democratic challengers Sarah Schofield and Charlie Parker don't have an across-the-board campaign strategy, where their campaigns are at different levels of funding.

But the 47-year-old Williams, spokesman for Davis School District, said each of them is playing to his or her strengths. Those strengths consist of combining high-profile signage with personal door-to-door campaigning.
Williams has gone so far as to have bought ad space on a billboard in the heart of Clearfield, the area he wishes to represent.

Schofield, of Syracuse, challenging Sen. Jerry Stevenson, R-Layton, for the Senate District 21 seat, and Parker, challenging Sen. Stuart Adams, R-Layton, in Senate District 22, are running similar high-profile campaigns that involve door-to-door campaigning.

"Those three candidates want to win. They want to move past the D and the R, and want to represent their districts," said Davis County Democratic Party Chairman Rob Miller, excited by the enthusiasm Schofield, Williams and Parker are demonstrating.

"We'll never win it unless we're aggressive," Miller said. "If you meet Charlie (Parker), you meet Chris (Williams), you meet Sarah (Schofield), how can you not like them, and how can you not know that they are there to listen to you," he said.

Longtime Davis County Democratic leader Richard Watson said that, this campaign season, Democratic candidates have been more aggressive with their fundraising efforts in order to get their names out.
"(Voters) can't vote for someone they don't know," said Watson, a candidate for open House Seat 19 in south Davis County.

Democratic challengers need a message that resonates with voters as they go door to door, Williams said. "People appreciate hearing from the candidates."

But running on the Democratic ticket in such a Republican stronghold, Williams admits, has caused some to question his political sanity.

"People say, 'Chris, you're crazy,' " Williams said.

But the professional communicator just isn't going to buy into that.

The county's voting history speaks volumes, though.

Of the people in Davis County who voted straight party tickets in the 2008 presidential election, 30,703 voted Republican and 10,017 voted Democrat, or 74.13 percent to 24.19 percent, said Pat Beckstead, Davis County election director.

Williams said he takes the county's voting history, particularly the history of his voting district, into account in his run, but he is "very encouraged" in walking neighborhoods.

Parker said with each house he visits, he leaves the voter with the message that his goal is to represent them in the Legislature.

"It's not about a party, but about who is going to represent the constituents better," the 39-year-old Parker said.

Parker said voters respect his being out there earning their vote versus expecting it. He said he has gained the support of some longtime Republicans when they hear he shares their concerns.

As far as running as a Democrat in a GOP-dominated county is concerned, Parker, a self-described new brand of Democrat, said he has not given it much thought.

Schofield, 29, a homemaker and mother of three, agrees with Parker that Davis Democrats are offering a new age of candidate, people who are no longer willing to sit back and not be heard. She has a proliferation of political signs, some with her picture.

She said: "I know I am the underdog. But as time goes on, I feel like I have more of chance than any other candidate from my area that has run before."

CLEARFIELD -- The race for House Seat 14 between Rep. Curt Oda, R-Clearfield, and Democratic challenger Chris Williams, is heating up faster than a Lady Gaga concert.

The two will meet in the Nov. 2 general election to determine who will capture the seat that serves Clearfield and a portion of Layton. But before November, there are some major political differences to settle between the two Clearfield residents.
Near the top of the list is education.

"When state legislators said they held public education harmless (in funding), I had to look around the room to see if I was the only one that heard that," said Williams.

Peter Corroon shows momentum in Governor’s Election

According to the latest poll done in Utah, completed less than 24 hours ago, Peter Corroon is showing strong momentum in closing the gap in the race for Governor.

The latest Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz and Associates (FM3) poll shows the race has tightened to a 15 point gap. This gap has closed significantly in just one month.

The Aug 23 Rasmussen poll results were: Herbert 60- Corroon 29, a 31 point gap. Ten days ago, the Deseret News/KSL TV/Utah Foundation, Dan Jones poll showed Herbert 52 – Corroon 31, a 21 point gap. Today’s results of FM3 show Herbert 51 – Corroon 36, a 15 point gap.

In the FM3 poll the key decision makers in this election – unaffiliated (independent) voters have switched their support with Corroon taking the lead.

“In the last 18 days it has become obvious that voters are showing serious doubt about Gary Herbert’s leadership. At the same time, as voters learn more about Peter Corroon and Sheryl Allen, they like what they see and hear,” said Donald Dunn, Corroon Campaign Manager.

“Seeing this race go from a 30 point gap to a 15 point gap in one month clearly demonstrates people are unsettled about Gary Herbert and are looking for something different. They are looking toward a Corroon/Allen ticket. This is truly one of the most competitive elections for Governor we have seen in a generation,” Dunn added.

The FM3 poll was conducted over two days with a sample of 500 people and a +/- of 4.4%.

I forgot to tell you when we met that I am a retired Air Force (22 years Active Duty) mother. I'm proud of my President and Nation, each military person fighting to keep of free, and those at their desk ensuring those individuals have what they need. Chris Williams For House District 14: Stories from the campaign trail

I love knocking on doors and meeting people. And it’s always amazing to me how quickly some people open up and bare their souls to you.

This past Saturday was one such instance.

I was knocking doors in Layton when I met a woman who is raising a disabled son. I quickly let her know that I was concerned about the rights of the disabled and how I’d represent those less fortunate than I on Capitol Hill.

You see, I am a twin, and my brother Bruce was born with cerebral palsy. I have no idea why I wasn’t born with CP instead of my brother. It has been a question I’ve had all my life.

As I was chatting with the woman in her front entryway, she told me about her own son and about abuse he had suffered at the hand of an aide who had been hired to provide care to him in his own home.

It quickly brought back memories of when my twin brother entered high school and was contending with a bully. The bully liked to come up from behind him and scare Bruce to see how high he would jump in his wheelchair.

One of the disabilities my twin has is that he has no peripheral vision; he sees like a racehorse whose eyes have been covered with blinders or blinkers.

So of course, when the bully would come up from behind, Bruce would have no idea that he was there. And this activity brought so much joy to the bully that it started to become a pastime.

Soon after I found out about it, I approached the bully, suggesting in no uncertain terms that the pastime end immediately and that he pick on someone who could defend himself, such as Bruce’s able-bodied twin.

The bully, come-to-find-out, didn’t realize the terror he was inflicting, apologized, and became a good friend to Bruce – which brings me to my final point.

That point is “there for the grace of God go I” and my absolute commitment to defend the defenseless.

I don’t know the exact details of the Layton case I mentioned above.

But this I do know. I will defend the defenseless. It is part of my core. It is who I am.

This is one story I learned as I walked to let people know I’m running for office. As I continue to meet people, I will share their stories and let you know how I will represent them and how I will represent you.

Davis County is finally getting some much needed help toward organizing and getting voters registered and committed to vote. I have made a commitment to help Rob organize this program and get it working. We have the support and help of Organizing for America so we think their expertise will be very helpful.

While we do that we are hoping to be able to identify some volunteers to help with other aspects of our local and state campaigns. This means we need all the help we can get from those of you willing to volunteer your services to either knock on some doors (if you're a bit nervous you can be paired with someone who has done this before) making some calls or doing some data entry.

From State Senate Candidate Charlie Parker: "I will be there to serve the people--the people of District 22."

In these troubled times, anyone who regularly reads a daily newspaper or the local news online can tell you that people can no longer trust their elected representatives in Salt Lake City. One will often see a story about a lawmaker who'd accepted a bribe from a lobbyist in exchange for their vote on a piece of legislation that would benefit the lobbyist's company. Perhaps one will see a story about a legislator who'd preached his support and commitment to certain community values, only for it to come out that he'd always been living a lie. This sort of thing is wholly unfortunate for our representative democracy, a system based heavily on the premise that voters' values and ideas be reflected in the vote of their representatives. I'm seeking to change that. As an typical, 30-something citizen, I was concerned about the state of our democracy; this is why I decided to run. I know I am best suited to represent the District; my values are the community's values and the community's values are my values. Three areas of grave concern to myself and our district are education, employment, and ethics--the three E's.

Education is an issue that is personally important to me because I have two children attending public school. Our children are the future. Our education funding has been completely cut for the first time in years, despite the fact that we still have students moving into the school system. We have to raise our per-pupil spending and raise the standard for our teachers. We need to reignite our teachers' passion for teaching our youth. Some ways we could do that include performance-based bonuses, incentives to pursue further education, and mentor programs with younger teachers. Utah ranks last among US states and the District of Columbia in per-pupil spending according to a recent census report. This itself is completely unacceptable, but even more unacceptable is the fact that the difference between ourselves and 50th place, Idaho, is more than 20% of Idaho's total. This is a travesty that must be remedied as quickly as possible. As your senator, I will fight for more funding for our education system.

In trying to fix employment issues, the role of the government is not to directly create jobs, but to do what we can to encourage business growth through mechanisms such as tax breaks and incentives for small businesses. As a former small business owner myself, I know that running a small business is not easy, but also that small businesses are highly important to the economy and to citizens' livelihoods. In these troubled economic times, the state must do all it can to keep small businesses solvent. Utah must be a state that stands out as an attractive choice for individuals to live and do business. As your senator, I will fight for tax breaks for small businesses and companies that create jobs.

Many legislators put their personal priorities and the priorities of their donors before the priorities of the people they've been elected to represent. These unfortunate "revolving door" politics have contributed heavily to what has made our legislature so corrupt and unethical. I pledge to be completely transparent in my political activities and to make the district's needs and priorities my first and only priority. Now, I'd like that every elected official had this same mentality, but it simply isn't so. To make sure that legislators' unethical activities are public and known, we need strong legislation mandating transparency in legislators' political activities and in our state government as a whole. We also need strong legislation limiting the amount of monetary influence legislative lobbyists have on our legislators. As your senator, I will fight for such reforms so that we might have a legislature truly of the people.

When I make crucial decisions on behalf of the district's citizens, I will do my utmost to understand all sides of the issue. I will remain committed and dedicated to the job to which I am elected, should I be fortunate enough to gain the support of the people. My voting decisions will be based on the values of the community, values like the effect on individuals, the effect on families and their ability to sustain an acceptable standard of living, and the short and long term fiscal effect on the state. There is only one group I will serve in the legislature, and it's not the lobbyists who will nearly sell their soul to court my vote. I'll be there to serve the people--the people of District 22.

Former Utah State Senator Dan Eastman (R-Bountiful) passed away last night from a heart attack at the age of 64.

Senator Eastman served Utah and the residents of District 23 with compassion and dignity, and as Chair of the Davis County Democratic Party and as one of his constituents I wanted to say that I am grateful for his public service and for his example of integrity in which he conducted that service.

My condolences to his wife Claudette, their children as well as other family and friends of former Senator Eastman.

Unfortunately for the people of Utah, GOP leaders allowed this legislative session to become mired in scandal and political theater, wasting another precious opportunity to solve the very real problems Utahns are facing every day.

It's embarrassing that Utah makes national headlines – not for our good works, but for the hypocrisy and poor decisions of the state's elected officials. This session was bookended with scandal – starting with the tragic fall of former Senate Majority Leader Sheldon Kilpack and ending with Thursday’s grievous disclosure by former House Majority Leader Kevin Garn.

We wish the families of all involved well, but I believe this is an opportunity for Utahns – and specifically the residents of Davis County – to elect new representation and to stop rewarding a party whose leaders claim to exemplify Utah’s values when they have repeatedly demonstrated that they do not understand the ethics and principles that make up those values.

In no way are we stating that the leadership or candidates of the Davis County Democratic Party are ethically superior, but we are not less, and we can claim that our candidates and leadership has been on the forefront of ethics reform, fair boundaries for Utah voters, and the fight against vouchers.

All of us can learn from this unfortunate scenario – as public servants, as media representatives, and as citizens – and move forward in a positive direction. There’s no better time for voters to pay attention to the various candidates for public office, to take a better look at both sides of the isle, and to elect strong, honest leaders to work on behalf of all of us.

Congress Needs Fixing

Congress is broken and needs to be fixed. Recent polls show the public approval of Congress is at a record low. To find out why, we must look behind Congress, and it’s not a pretty sight. We find the business interests and lobbyists are controlling the behavior of our Congress by their money donations and other favors. During the debate over the health care reform plan, the insurance industry was spending 1.5 million dollars a day. Our Representative from the 2nd district has accepted from the medical industry over $250,000. The representative from our 1st district, Rob Bishop, has requested over $6.5 billion of earmarks for his “friends.” Senator Orrin Hatch has accepted a $23,000 donation for his effort to bring Comcast and NBC together. It appears that business interests affect the behavior of many of our legislators. This has to be fixed and here’s how: 1. Install term limits for all Senators and Congressmen. 2. Mandate spending limits on all political campaigns. 3. Do not allow any political advertising through the media 60 days before Election Day. 4. Make it easier for a third party to qualify for campaign money. 5. Do away with the Electoral College in selecting our Presidents, have it based on popular vote; one person, one vote. There is not room to discuss these ideas in detail, but let’s have your opinions on how we can fix our Congress and make it more responsive to the citizenry, not the business interests.

Salt Lake City, UT – Democratic State Party Chair Wayne Holland issued the following statement regarding the arrest of Senate Republican Leader Sheldon Killpack for suspicion of driving under the influence:

“Senate Republican Leader Sheldon Killpack’s circumstances are tragic – for him and his family, his constituents and colleagues, and for the public who he may have endangered.

We ask all Utahns to honor the principle that he is to be presumed innocent of the charge of driving under the influence until proven guilty. However, his decision to refuse to comply with the investigating police officer’s request for breath test shows that he did not deal with this in a responsible, forthright manner.

As a public figure, he knows that he will be held to a high standard. We expect that there will be consequences for his leadership position and his position as Chair of the Senate Ethics Committee.”

On every second Saturday of the month the Davis and Weber County Democrats meet for our Democratic Breakfast Club. Unfortunately, this weeks breakfast is being moved to next Saturday due to scheduling issues with our guest speaker.

We will be be meeting next Saturday in Ogden and we will be posting additional information early next week. Our apologies for the short notice.

You may have listened to Ethan Millard on KSL's The NIGHTSIDE PROJECT but this Saturday (December 12th) you can meet him in person. Ethan will address the Davis and Weber County Democrats at Granny Annie's Restraint located at 286 North 400 West in Kaysville at 8:30 a.m.

Ethan Millard took the Utah political world by storm with his groundbreaking website SLCSpin.com. Although he never hid his identity, many in Utah's political establishment refused to believe the website was the work of "just some guy". Some of the more colorful theories about Ethan were that he was actually a highly paid out of state political operative, and that he was the best connected woman in Utah politics.

Ethan joined KSL as a political analyst on the Nightside Project and has been a constant presence since the very first broadcast. Ethan currently co- hosts the Nightside Project with Alex Kirry.

In 2007 KSL created the Nightside After Party with Ethan as its very first host. The program originally aired from 11 to Midnight and has since been expanded to two hours beginning each weeknight at 10pm. Just like The Nightside Project, The After Party is always rooted in current events, and is most often political but always controversial.

Ethan and Alex recently inaugurated The Weekend Throw down, two hours of energetic talk airing Saturdays at Noon. Open opportunity to join Sam Granato to canvass for Fair Boundaries

(Salt Lake City, Utah) – December 3, 2009 – The Fair Boundaries Coalition is pleased to announce that Sam Granato, candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010, will join us this Saturday in the effort to gather the required number of signatures in Davis County as part of the Fair Boundaries petition drive. This is a non-partisan effort to place an initiative on the 2010 ballot statewide to create an independent redistricting commission to eliminate the conflict of interest in having the Utah legislature draw their own legislative districts. Dear Davis County Resident,

Thanksgiving is the holiday where we gather with our family and friends to not only express our gratitude but to also reflect upon what we are grateful for.

As chair of the Davis County Democratic Party, I wanted to express my appreciation and gratitude to all the residents of Davis County, the county that my wife Michelle and I decided would be the place where we would raise our children and make our home.

When I actively entered the political world I had no idea where my activism would take me, but I did understand that I wanted to help re-build a party that has had a wonderful and successful history of leadership and stewardship for Utah residents and I wanted to make a difference for our seniors who were struggling to maintain the American dream due to the overwhelming cost of their health care.

I'm not sure that I have been successful, but I do know that I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be involved in Utah politics and I am even more grateful to have met so many wonderful people from so many different political ideologies. Meeting you has been my reward, and that is what I am grateful for today as I reflect back and push forward, dreaming of a better future for us all.

Thanksgiving became an official holiday during the Civil War when then President Abraham Lincoln decreed that the last Thursday in November would be set aside as a day of Thanksgiving. That was a difficult time, a time of war where brothers fought brothers and when our Union was unsure.

It is my prayer that the good citizens of our great Country never need go through that type of division again, and that we will all reflect on the message of the first Thanksgiving where Native Americans and Pilgrims came together and worked together for their common good and survival.

We are all in this together, and I am grateful to be here with you, as a citizen of these United States and as a resident of Davis County.

May God bless you, and may we bless each other with civility and compassion throughout this holiday season and beyond.

DCD Endorses Fair Boundaries - Because your vote should count...

The Fair Boundaries Initiative has already received endorsements from KSL, the Salt Lake Tribune, the Deseret News and the Tooele Transcript. Fair Boundaries has also found bi-partisan support, and in Davis County the leader of the Fair Boundaries initiative is Independent voter, Randy Miller.

On Thursday, November 12, 2009 the Davis County Democratic Party Executive Committee voted unanimously to endorse and support the Fair Boundaries Initiative even without having a representative from Fair Boundaries in attendance.

Unfortunately, Davis County is lagging behind in petition signatures and the deadline for signatures is coming up fast, so it is the intent of the Davis County Democrats to organize a group of volunteers to help Fair Boundaries get the signatures they need, but there is a problem, we need more help.

2008 was a banner year for the Davis County Democrats for participation from delegates and Obama supporters, but that support has weened a bit and without your help this important initiative could suffer an unnecessary death in Davis County.

The Party has heard from many of you on Health Care Reform and many other National issues, but we are also hearing from the same people that they are too busy to help find signatures for Fair Boundaries or to run for office.

Frankly speaking, unless we, the Democratic residents of Davis County, are willing to put some time into changing the government we love to grip about than the truth is, we won't get the government we need, but we will surely get the government we deserve.

Anyone Davis County resident who believes that your vote should count and who is willing to make the time to get the signatures needed to put this important initiative on the ballot can call 801-867-1704, or you contact us by sending an e-mail to utahamicus@gmail.com. We are currently working on time and dates to gather signatures as a group, but also be aware that you can get a petition to place in your business, or to walk your neighborhood at your convenience.

Tribune Editorial Off Base...

Editorial writer Casey Jones often writes of things painful to the 'Dumbocrats' in Utah. His latest editorial does not depart from past skewerings of the local political scene. This time he goes too far in his attack on Rep. Jim Matheson. Yes, I wish he (Matheson) would have supported the recent House health care reform legislation.

Jones goes so far as to say if the congressman does not adopt a more harmonious to Demo party stance, "he'll be citizen Matheson 14 months from now."

What Mr. Jones does not seem to understand is Jim Matheson was elected to represent the citizens of his district. Apparently, he does this rather well considering he received 63% of the vote in the last election.

I have to ask here -- What's so wrong about representative democracy? Many of us complain, (in my district too), how our Utah Legislature has lost touch with the electorate. Ethics reform, fair boundaries, civil rights for all Utahns, burial of 'nukeler' waste are all issues the majority seems to be at odds over with our state government.

The real question Mr. Jones is whether or not Rep. Matheson represents his district. I think he does and I would take him a thousand times over other alternatives. How about Jason Chafetz? The alternatives are both scary and nauseating. Leave the good congressman alone Mr. Jones.

Voter arrested in Centerville

Saw this today and chuckled from Tribune reader's comments:
Centerville man arrested in connection with bank robbery. First the article:

"Police arrested a man they suspect of robbing a Centerville bank after a standoff at his home late Monday.
A man dressed in a camouflage jacket went into Chase Bank at 315 N. Marketplace Drive about 3:45 p.m. on Monday, told a teller he was a robber and demanded money, said Centerville police Lt. Paul Child. After receiving some cash, the man walked away and dropped a handgun he had not previously displayed. He recovered his gun and fled, Child said.
Later a beautician at a nearby Dollar Cuts reported that a man matching the robber's description was getting into a black truck. Police had earlier received reports of a reckless driver in a black truck and matched that license plate to a home near 1900 South and Spring Creek Drive.
SWAT teams tried to contact the man by phone and then by bullhorn, which prompted a 12-year-old boy to leave the house. He was taken into protective care, Child said. Teams then used tear gas and went into the house, where they arrested the child's father.

If the same Centerville prosecutor handles this case, as the case with the ex-Wal-Mart employee who came into the Centerville store with a gun to kill his ex-manager, look out. This bank robber was probable out of jail in three hours on $150 cash bond and a misdemeanor charge.

Nah, he is not the same man. Last year this guy wanted to rob the bank but in doing his business at Centerville's Carl's Jr. he dropped his weapon there and blew the porcelain toto to pieces. Lt. Child and Centerville's finest arrived on site, failed to site the man for illegal discharge of a firearm in the men's room, (at one of Centerville's many upscale restaurants) and set the man free. Carl's held a wake subsequently for the broken John and the men's room was out of commission for a week.

Do you suppose this perpetrator was a voter? Did he vote early? He's in jail now so maybe he did not get to vote this year. Maybe he doesn't really care.

You've Seen the Movie -- Now It's Time to ACT!

It's the #1 question I'm constantly asked after people see my movie: "OK -- so NOW what can I DO?!"

You want something to do? Well, you've come to the right place! 'Cause I got 15 things you and I can do right now to fight back and try to fix this very broken system.

Here they are:

FIVE THINGS WE DEMAND THE PRESIDENT AND CONGRESS DO IMMEDIATELY:

1. Declare a moratorium on all home evictions. Not one more family should be thrown out of their home. The banks must adjust their monthly mortgage payments to be in line with what people's homes are now truly worth -- and what they can afford. Also, it must be stated by law: If you lose your job, you cannot be tossed out of your home.

2. Congress must join the civilized world and expand Medicare For All Americans. A single, nonprofit source must run a universal health care system that covers everyone. Medical bills are now the #1 cause of bankruptcies and evictions in this country. Medicare For All will end this misery. The bill to make this happen is called H.R. 3200. You must call AND write your members of Congress and demand its passage, no compromises allowed.

3. Demand publicly-funded elections and a prohibition on elected officials leaving office and becoming lobbyists. Yes, those very members of Congress who solicit and receive millions of dollars from wealthy interests must vote to remove ALL money from our electoral and legislative process. Tell your members of Congress they must support campaign finance bill H.R.1826.

4. Each of the 50 states must create a state-owned public bank like they have in North Dakota. Then congress MUST reinstate all the strict pre-Reagan regulations on all commercial banks, investment firms, insurance companies -- and all the other industries that have been savaged by deregulation: Airlines, the food industry, pharmaceutical companies -- you name it. If a company's primary motive to exist is to make a profit, then it needs a set of stringent rules to live by -- and the first rule is "Do no harm." The second rule: The question must always be asked -- "Is this for the common good?" (Click here for some info about the state-owned Bank of North Dakota.)

5. Save this fragile planet and declare that all the energy resources above and beneath the ground are owned collectively by all of us. Just like they do it in Sarah Palin's socialist Alaska. We only have a few decades of oil left. The public must be the owners and landlords of the natural resources and energy that exists within our borders or we will descend further into corporate anarchy. And when it comes to burning fossil fuels to transport ourselves, we must cease using the internal combustion engine and instruct our auto/transportation companies to rehire our skilled workforce and build mass transit (clean buses, light rail, subways, bullet trains, etc.) and new cars that don't contribute to climate change. (For more on this, here's a proposal I wrote in December.) Demand that General Motors' de facto chairman, Barack Obama, issue a JFK man-on-the-moon-style challenge to turn our country into a nation of trains and buses and subways. For Pete's sake, people, we were the ones who invented (or perfected) these damn things in the first place!!

FIVE THINGS WE CAN DO TO MAKE CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT LISTEN TO US:

1. Each of us must get into the daily habit of taking 5 minutes to make four brief calls: One to the President (202-456-1414), one to your Congressperson (202-224-3121) and one to each of your two Senators (202-224-3121). To find out who represents you, click here. Take just one minute on each of these calls to let them know how you expect them to vote on a particular issue. Let them know you will have no hesitation voting for a primary opponent -- or even a candidate from another party -- if they don't do our bidding. Trust me, they will listen. If you have another five minutes, click here to send them each an email. And if you really want to drop an anvil on them, send them a snail mail letter!

2. Take over your local Democratic Party. Remember how much fun you had with all those friends and neighbors working together to get Barack Obama elected? YOU DID THE IMPOSSIBLE. It's time to re-up! Get everyone back together and go to the monthly meeting of your town or county Democratic Party -- and become the majority that runs it! There will not be many in attendance and they will either be happy or in shock that you and the Obama Revolution have entered the room looking like you mean business. President Obama's agenda will never happen without mass grass roots action -- and he won't feel encouraged to do the right thing if no one has his back, whether it's to stand with him, or push him in the right direction. When you all become the local Democratic Party, send me a photo of the group and I'll post it on my website.

3. Recruit someone to run for office who can win in your local elections next year -- or, better yet, consider running for office yourself! You don't have to settle for the incumbent who always expects to win. You can be our next representative! Don't believe it can happen? Check out these examples of regular citizens who got elected: State Senator Deb Simpson, California State Assemblyman Isadore Hall, Tempe, Arizona City Councilman Corey Woods, Wisconsin State Assemblyman Chris Danou, and Washington State Representative Larry Seaquist. The list goes on and on -- and you should be on it!

4. Show up. Picket the local branch of a big bank that took the bailout money. Hold vigils and marches. Consider civil disobedience. Those town hall meetings are open to you, too (and there's more of us than there are of them!). Make some noise, have some fun, get on the local news. Place "Capitalism Did This" signs on empty foreclosed homes, closed down businesses, crumbling schools and infrastructure. (You can download them from my website.)

5. Start your own media. You. Just you (or you and a couple friends). The mainstream media is owned by corporate America and, with few exceptions, it will never tell the whole truth -- so you have to do it! Start a blog! Start a website of real local news (here's an example: The Michigan Messenger). Tweet your friends and use Facebook to let them know what they need to do politically. The daily papers are dying. If you don't fill that void, who will?

FIVE THINGS WE SHOULD DO TO PROTECT OURSELVES AND OUR LOVED ONES UNTIL WE GET THROUGH THIS MESS:

1. Take your money out of your bank if it took bailout money and place it in a locally-owned bank or, preferably, a credit union.

2. Get rid of all your credit cards but one -- the kind where you have to pay up at the end of the month or you lose your card.

3. Do not invest in the stock market. If you have any extra cash, put it away in a savings account or, if you can, pay down on your mortgage so you can own your home as soon as possible. You can also buy very safe government savings bonds or T-bills. Or just buy your mother some flowers.

4. Unionize your workplace so that you and your coworkers have a say in how your business is run. Here's how to do it (more info here). Nothing is more American than democracy, and democracy shouldn't be checked at the door when you enter your workplace. Another way to Americanize your workplace is to turn your business into a worker-owned cooperative. You are not a wage slave. You are a free person, and you giving up eight hours of your life every day to someone else is to be properly compensated and respected.

5. Take care of yourself and your family. Sorry to go all Oprah on you, but she's right: Find a place of peace in your life and make the choice to be around people who are not full of negativity and cynicism. Look for those who nurture and love. Turn off the TV and the Blackberry and go for a 30-minute walk every day. Eat fruits and vegetables and cut down on anything that has sugar, high fructose corn syrup, white flour or too much sodium (salt) in it (and, as Michael Pollan says, "Eat (real) food, not too much, mostly plants"). Get seven hours of sleep each night and take the time to read a book a month. I know this sounds like I've turned into your grandma, but, dammit, take a good hard look at Granny -- she's fit, she's rested and she knows the names of both of her U.S. Senators without having to Google them. We might do well to listen to her. If we don't put our own "oxygen mask" on first (as they say on the airplane), we will be of no use to the rest of the nation in enacting any of this action plan!

I'm sure there are many other ideas you can come up with on how we can build this movement. Get creative. Think outside the politics-as-usual box. BE SUBVERSIVE! Think of that local action no one else has tried. Behave as if your life depended on it. Be bold! Try doing something with reckless abandon. It may just liberate you and your community and your nation.

Campaign Reform in Centerville and Utah

Two things are evident in the air this fall. Neither one of them has to do with football spirals at the Ute’s or Cougar stadiums. With the recent non-event of county primary elections, (in terms of voter turnout and participation), it is clear that APATHY rules the electorate even in our little town of Centerville.

Our former Governor appointed a select group, Commission on Strengthening Utah's Democracy to study the matter. Most agree there is a need for ethics reforms in state government but given the distance and the new job title for Governor Huntsman it isn’t going to happen with former Lt. Governor Herbert.

Efforts by Kim Burningham and his group, Utahns for Ethical Government are working diligently to bring reform via the ballot box. A review of statewide voter turnout to communities in Davis County yields the same results. Among those who know, this is a consequence of Utah’s own ‘wild west’ campaign practices leaving voters dissatisfied with candidates and politicians for the most part. In the 2006 election Utah had the lowest voting rate in the nation at 36.7 per cent. We used to be among the highest in any election. In the recent countywide primaries for Davis County voter turnout was between an abysmal 6 and 10 percent.

If campaign reform is going to happen on the state level it should begin on the local level. Consider among the four candidates for Centerville City Council this electoral cycle the distribution of campaign contribution and expenses. It is obvious to anyone driving through our fair city who has spent and collected the largest sums of money. To some degree the election results support that premise. Incumbent Justin Allen, (pictured here at no cost to the candidate), raised some $4,875.00 prior to the primary election, more than $3,000.00 coming from donors external to Centerville. The other three candidates collected and spent a combined $1300.00 and change.

Campaign finance reform needs to happen. The good efforts of the Governor’s select commission needs to be supported along with the efforts of Utahns for Ethical Government. Until change is made money buys votes in our city and in this state. Contact your elected representatives and mayor and let them know how you feel about our elections. In Centerville do you want them being bought by the Northern Wastach Association of Realtors, or the Utah Apartment Association, Stokes Strategies or any other lobbyist or special interest group?

A Time to Every Purpose: Planning & Implementation

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – Legislation sponsored by United States Senators Robert Bennett (R-UT) and David Vitter (R-LA) would require the Census Bureau to amend questionnaires for the 2010 census to include a question to determine legal status and citizenship.

According to Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Chair of the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Subcommittee, the Bennett-Vitter Amendment would be a “financial challenge that borders on… a nightmare.”

“Anyone who has been involved in a construction project can tell you that the budget is blown when changes, additions, and deletions are made to the plans once the actual building process is underway. This business principle is apparently lost on Senator Bennett. I had thought better of his business skills,” said Sam Granato, candidate for the U.S. Senate.

The Census is a highly coordinated process which has over 700,000 staffers and costs $14 billion. The amendment would waste hundreds of millions of dollars because the Census Bureau has already printed materials, trained workers, and coordinated the nationwide canvass. The Bureau would not have time to test whether the question would be answered truthfully or whether it might cause people to refuse to participate in the counting process leading to a less accurate census and more reliance on statistical samples for future public appropriations.

“We cannot afford to place the efforts made already on the scrap heap for the political convenience of career politicians. Senator Bennett, there is a time to every purpose. There is a time for planning and a time for implementation. The time for planning for the 2010 census is over. The time for implementation has begun. I will be happy to put your idea on the table for 2020 at the appropriate time.” Granato added, “If the Republican Congress and President Bush had addressed immigration reform in a timely and responsible manner earlier this decade, this census issue would be mute. Lack of respect for the taxpayer’s money and the inappropriate and untimely use of polarizing issues is why Utah needs fresh leadership in Washington.”

A Courageous Democratic Leader Speaks Out...

Call it another chapter to the book "Profiles in Courage" as Senate Majority Leader, (and Mormon), Harry Reid of Nevada met with Gay activist organizers last week. From a nice article in this morning's Tribune, Senator Reid characterized efforts by the LDS Church supporting Prop 8 in California as a "waste of resources and good will." Furthermore he said, "The Church needs to be focused on other things and it was harmful to focus on such a divisive issue." Previously, I have heard criticisms leveled at Reid because he was such a 'liberal Democrat' from my conservative Mormon friends. Thank you Senator Reid for speaking out, being honest, and most of all compassionate towards those who are different than the Mormon conservative majority.

This last Saturday Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon addressed the Davis and Weber County Democratic Breakfast Club at Granny Annie's Restaurant in Kaysville. One thing that was certain was the Davis and Weber Democrats who attended were unanimous in their support for Mayor Corroon, and the possibility that Peter may run as our candidate for governor in 2010.

Utah State Democratic Chair Wayne Holland and United States Senate Candidate Sam Granato were also in attendance to show their support.

The Davis and Weber Democratic Breakfast Club meets every second Saturday of the month at 8:30 a.m.

Next month's speaker will be Senate Minority Leader Patricia Jones. The breakfast will be held in Ogden at the Golden Corral Restaurant located at 988 Washington Blvd.

Utah "Dumbocrats" need to wise up...

A hard hitting condemnation of Utah politics as usual landed on my breakfast table this morning authored by Casey Jones, one of the editorial writers for the Tribune. Read it online if you don't imbibe the Tribune. I have never heard the term "Dumbocrats" before, maybe because I have lived such a sheltered life all these years in Utah. Equal blame, aside from the party I love, is laid on our governor and our GOP super majority. Seems until there is real ethics reform, according to Mr. Jones, apathy wins. For example he writes, "In reality, Republican lawmakers are selected by extremist party delegates who, after a nod toward Temple Square, choose conservative candidates who are guaranteed to win election in their gerrymandered districts. That coupled with the state's predisposition toward prescription painkillers, probably explains Utah voters' tendency to turn off instead of turn out."

I have asked, and continue to do so, where is the leadership of the party I love on the matter of the ethics reform initiative? Until ethics reform becomes a reality nothing different will happen. A CALL TO ACTION: President Obama on winning the Nobel Peace Prize

This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I'd been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.

To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.

That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won't all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.

This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.

So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together. I'm grateful that you've stood with me thus far, and I'm honored to continue our vital work in the years to come.

Dear President Obama,

How outstanding that you've been recognized today as a man of peace. Your swift, early pronouncements -- you will close Guantanamo, you will bring the troops home from Iraq, you want a nuclear weapon-free world, you admitted to the Iranians that we overthrew their democratically-elected president in 1953, you made that great speech to the Islamic world in Cairo, you've eliminated that useless term "The War on Terror," you've put an end to torture -- these have all made us and the rest of the world feel a bit more safe considering the disaster of the past eight years. In eight months you have done an about face and taken this country in a much more sane direction.

But...

The irony that you have been awarded this prize on the 2nd day of the ninth year of our War in Afghanistan is not lost on anyone. You are truly at a crossroads now. You can listen to the generals and expand the war (only to result in a far-too-predictable defeat) or you can declare Bush's Wars over, and bring all the troops home. Now. That's what a true man of peace would do.

There is nothing wrong with you doing what the last guy failed to do -- capture the man or men responsible for the mass murder of 3,000 people on 9/11. BUT YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH TANKS AND TROOPS. You are pursuing a criminal, not an army. You do not use a stick of dynamite to get rid of a mouse.

The Taliban is another matter. That is a problem for the people of Afghanistan to resolve -- just as we did in 1776, the French did in 1789, the Cubans did in 1959, the Nicaraguans did in 1979 and the people of East Berlin did in 1989. One thing is certain through all revolutions by people who wish to be free -- they ultimately have to bring about that freedom themselves. Others can be supportive, but freedom can not be delivered from the front seat of someone else's Humvee.

You have to end our involvement in Afghanistan now. If you don't, you'll have no choice but to return the prize to Oslo.

This morning's Tribune reports the Guv is opposed to campaign contribution limits. Opposition to reigning in the 'wild west' atmosphere of unregulated campaign contributions begins on the local level and goes to the highest office in state government. In Centerville one city council candidate had already spent $5,000.00 even before the recent primary election. We also got a recorded call from our mayor wanting us to vote for this same candidate. We are being 'nuked' here with money. Some of it comes from Rep. Bishop's friends from in and out of the state, even from state legislators. One has to ask what interest do they have in a Centerville election?

It is time we step up, support the bipartisan group, Utahns for Ethical Government, attempting to bring justice to the 'wild west'. You can sign their petition and donate money to get these reforms on the ballot. We commend them for their efforts. Let us take away the ability of special interests to purchase votes and buy elected office in Centerville, Davis County, and the State of Utah.

Utah Democratic Party Outraged by School Districts’ Reaction to Presidential address

The Utah State Democratic Party has been receiving calls all day regarding the reactionary position some Utah School Districts have taken in response to a very small minority of right wing extremists expressing paranoia over the President’s scheduled address to students around the country on Tuesday morning. The Department of Education has made abundantly clear on its website and through communications with local schools throughout the nation the purpose of this address is simply to encourage students to work hard and commit to achieving the best education possible.

The Utah State Democratic Party is extremely troubled by reports district administrators are caving to extremists by “warning parents” of the president’s speech. In the newly formed CanyonsSchool District waiver forms are proactively being circulated via their website.

President Obama is not the first president to address students and appearances by presidents in public schools to promote literacy, science and other aspects of the educational experience are common. The address by our president to the nation’s school children is in this tradition and is not a political speech. It has become clear the right is intent on politicizing everything in an effort to derail the presidency of Barack Obama and this politicization will not stop even at the school house door.

According to Utah State Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Holland “It is a sad day when even a very small number of Americans respond to a plea from our country’s leader to value the educational opportunities our schools offer with fear and paranoia. I am disappointed local districts are in turn responding with letters warning parents of the president’s speech.”

The Utah Democratic Party urges school superintendents, principals, and teachers to show our president the respect he deserves. While as Americans we value the right to disagree over how best to respond to various issues, a call by our nation’s highest elected official for our children to work hard and live up to their full potential is surely something all of us can agree on regardless of party affiliation.

WASHINGTON – In his weekly address, President Obama set the record straight on some of the most pervasive myths about health insurance reform. He addressed a range of "outrageous myths" including that illegal immigrants will be covered, that abortions will be funded by taxpayer dollars, that so-called "death panels" will be formed to decide who receives treatment, and that reform will lead to a government takeover of health care. In addition, the President reiterated that a public option would be just that – an option, not a requirement, for consumers - and would help introduce choice and competition to the health care market, while reminding American’s that it is only one component of health reform. The proposed reforms will also provide Americans unprecedented security and stability by prohibiting insurance companies from refusing or dropping coverage due to medical history, capping out-of-pocket expenses, and banning caps on coverage, among other consumer protections.

Each and every day in this country, Americans are grappling with health care premiums that are growing three times the rate of wages and insurance company policies that limit coverage and raise out-of-pocket costs. Thousands are losing their insurance coverage each day.

Without real reform, the burdens on America’s families and businesses will continue to multiply. We’ve had a vigorous debate about health insurance reform, and rightly so. This is an issue of vital concern to every American, and I’m glad that so many are engaged.

But it also should be an honest debate, not one dominated by willful misrepresentations and outright distortions, spread by the very folks who would benefit the most by keeping things exactly as they are.

So today, I want to spend a few minutes debunking some of the more outrageous myths circulating on the internet, on cable TV, and repeated at some town halls across this country.

Let’s start with the false claim that illegal immigrants will get health insurance under reform. That’s not true. Illegal immigrants would not be covered. That idea has never even been on the table. Some are also saying that coverage for abortions would be mandated under reform. Also false. When it comes to the current ban on using tax dollars for abortions, nothing will change under reform. And as every credible person who has looked into it has said, there are no so-called "death panels" – an offensive notion to me and to the American people. These are phony claims meant to divide us.

And we’ve all heard the charge that reform will somehow bring about a government takeover of health care. I know that sounds scary to many folks. It sounds scary to me, too. But here’s the thing: it’s not true. I no sooner want government to get between you and your doctor than I want insurance companies to make arbitrary decisions about what medical care is best for you, as they do today. As I’ve said from the beginning, under the reform we seek, if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your private health insurance plan, you can keep your plan. Period.

Now, the source of a lot of these fears about government-run health care is confusion over what’s called the public option. This is one idea among many to provide more competition and choice, especially in the many places around the country where just one insurer thoroughly dominates the marketplace. This alternative would have to operate as any other insurer, on the basis of the premiums it collects. And let me repeat – it would be just an option; those who prefer their private insurer would be under no obligation to shift to a public plan.

The insurance companies and their allies don’t like this idea, or any that would promote greater competition. I get that. And I expect there will be a lot of discussion about it when Congress returns.

But this one aspect of the health care debate shouldn’t overshadow the other important steps we can and must take to reduce the increasing burdens families and businesses face.

So let me stress them again: If you don’t have insurance, you will finally have access to quality coverage you can afford. If you do have coverage, you will benefit from more security and more stability when it comes to your insurance. If you move, lose your job, or change jobs, you will not have to worry about losing health coverage. And we will set up tough consumer protections that will hold insurance companies accountable and stop them from exploiting you with unfair practices.

We’ll prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage because of a person’s medical history. They will not be able to drop your coverage if you get sick. They will not be able to water down your coverage when you need it most. They will no longer be able to place some arbitrary cap on the amount of coverage you can receive in a given year or a lifetime. We’ll place a limit on how much you can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses, because no one in America should go broke because they get sick.

And we will require insurance companies to cover routine checkups and preventive care, like mammograms and colonoscopies. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be catching diseases like breast cancer and colon cancer on the front end. That makes sense, it saves lives, and it will also save money over the long-run. Taken together, the reforms we’re seeking will help bring down skyrocketing costs, which will mean real savings for families, businesses, and government.

We know what a failure to act would bring: More of the same. More of the same exploding costs. More of the same diminished coverage. If we fail to act, the crisis will grow. More families will go without coverage. More businesses will be forced to drop or water down their plans.

So we can push off the day of reckoning and fail to deal with the flaws in the system, just as Washington has done, year after year, decade after decade. Or we can take steps that will provide every American family and business a measure of security and stability they lack today.

It has never been easy, moving this nation forward. There are always those who oppose it, and those who use fear to block change. But what has always distinguished America is that when all the arguments have been heard, and all the concerns have been voiced, and the time comes to do what must be done, we rise above our differences, grasp each others’ hands, and march forward as one nation and one people, some of us Democrats, some of us Republicans, all of us Americans.

This is our chance to march forward. I cannot promise you that the reforms we seek will be perfect or make a difference overnight. But I can promise you this: if we pass health insurance reform, we will look back many years from now and say, this was the moment we summoned what’s best in each of us to make life better for all of us. This was the moment when we built a health care system worthy of the nation and the people we love. This was the moment we earned our place alongside the greatest generations. And that is what our generation of Americans is called to do right now.

Hello Davis County Democrats!

I wanted to inform you on some of our previous and upcoming events.

As many of you know the Davis County Democratic Party holds an informal breakfast every second Saturday of the month. Recently, our executive committee decided to work closer with the Weber County Democratic Party on some events and our monthly breakfast meetings.
At our June breakfast held at Granny Annie's Family Restaurant State Senator Gene Davis from Salt Lake City addressed Weber and Davis Democrats on health care issues.

Our July breakfast was held at the Golden Corral Restaurant and featured Weber County's newly appointed county attorney, Dee Smith, who replaced the vacancy left when former Weber County Attorney, Mark DeCaria, was appointed by then Governor Huntman as a judge to the 2nd District court.

We will re-join our Weber County Democratic Cousins on September 12th at the Golden Corral in Ogden (988 Washington Blvd) at 8:30 a.m. where our featured guest will be United States Senate candidate Sam Granato.

Our Weber cousins will then join us on October 10th at Granny Annie's in Kaysville (286 N 400 W) at 8:30 a.m. to meet with Salt Lake County's most popular public servant and potential 2010 Utah Democratic Gubernatorial candidate, Mayor Peter Corroon.

On September 19th the Davis County Democrats will take on the Davis County Republican Party for our fifth annual softball championship and picnic. This is an important event especially considering the whooping we gave to the GOP last year. Please join us and help us defend our title. Time and location to be announced.

I also wanted to reach out to Davis Democrats and ask for your help. We need a volunteer committee to help plan our first annual Halloween fundraiser. Anyone who would like to help plan and orchestrate this event can contact Jamie Nagle, our county Party secretary at jamienagle@ymail.com.

This is our time to build our Party at the county level. It may seem far away but 2010 is just around the corner and we need to find our candidates for those seats and build a stronger infrastructure for those candidates now.

Please take some time to think of people in your districts that you believe would make a great public servant and then share your thoughts with us.

We have some great opportunities coming up for Davis County Democrats in 2010. Remember, we have an open state senate seat due to the appointment of Greg Bell as our new Lieutenant Governor.

And, there may also be an open seat in Bountiful. If this is true (and my little blue bird says it is) we need to be ready.

Prince Azure in the Rose Garden?

Not likely. If you are a player of the board game "Clue" and read a recent edtion of Time. It was Dick in the veep's office. This is disclosed in a most illuminating article of July 24, '09. The final days and hours of the Bush regime are detailed with some clarity. I concluded two things from my read: first, my respect for 'W' has increased some, and two, Dick Cheney is guilty of outing Valerie Plame for which his long time assistant and friend Lewis I. (Scooter) Libby took the hit. To quote just a paragraph or so from the piece: "These last hours represent a climactic chapter in the mysterious and mostly opaque relationship at the center of a tumultuous period in American history. It reveals how one question — whether to grant a presidential pardon to a top vice-presidential aide — strained the bonds between Bush and his deputy and closest counselor. It reveals a gap in the two men's views of crime and punishment. And in a broader way, it uncovers a fundamental difference in how the two men regarded the legacy of the Bush years. As a Cheney confidant puts it, the Vice President believed he and the President could claim the war on terrorism as his greatest legacy only if they defended at all costs the men and women who fought in the trenches. When it came to Libby, Bush felt he had done enough...While packing boxes in the upstairs residence, according to his associates, Bush noted that he was again under pressure from Cheney to pardon Libby. He characterized Cheney as a friend and a good Vice President but said his pardon request had little internal support. If the presidential staff were polled, the result would be 100 to 1 against a pardon, Bush joked. Then he turned to Sharp. "What's the bottom line here? Did this guy lie or not?"

The lawyer, who had followed the case very closely, replied affirmatively.

Bush indicated that he had already come to that conclusion too.

"O.K., that's it," Bush said."

Libby lied, Prince Azure is innocent, and Cheney likely told Libby to leak reports to, (recently passed), editorial writer Robert Novak attempting to discredit her husband Ambassador Joe Wilson and ending Plame's career as a CIA operative.

Future County Dems Hold Retreat

This past week a group representing future Democratic Party members of Davis County held a retreat in the high mountain setting of the Manti La Sal National Forest above Ferron UT. These young men represent some of the best and brightest of the Latino and Anglo community including Centerville, West Bountiful and Bountiful. Topics of discussion included the recent confirmation process of Judge Sotomayor and the clearly biased opposition to her confirmation from Utah's two R senators. The need for comprehensive immigration reform was a major topic as well as discussions about the environment and issues concerning the warming of our planet. Recently enacted Utah Senate Bill 81 further limiting the freedoms of the Hispanic community was noted.

We learned the proper etiquette for retiring an American Flag and did so of one flown at Weber State University for a number of years. We discussed the sacrifices so many young men, only a few years older than this group, had made in defense of that flag and what it stands for.

Service hours were performed for the Forest Service and the group was recognized for their volunteerism during the retreat. A flagpole on the site had been left in some disrepair and one of our first projects was to restore it to service. Boys and leaders from as far away as Columbia, Peru, Mexico assisted in the rehabilitation and raising of the Stars and Stripes followed by a memorable Pledge of Allegiance ceremony. I must say I was emotionally moved as we hoisted the flag, not being a flag flying zealot kind of American.

Latinos in the US are the fastest growing segment in the population and this demographic sends chills up the spines of Republican Party planners as increasingly greater numbers of young Latinos become involved in political process. From 1990 to 2004, the Latino population across the U.S. grew 85%. In Utah during that same time, the Latino population grew 200%. The Latino population is young and accounting for about half of the nation’s population growth. Outreach to this demographic in Davis County is critical for the future of the party by Democratic Party activists will reap significant electoral benefits. This troop of boys will be holding a follow up retreat in October when we will be hiking into Mule Canyon and exploring the Anasazi ruins.

Depleted Uranium -- Much ado about nothing?

HEAL’s fight against depleted uranium, (DU), at Envirocare is an exaggerated one in my opinion. I suggest we fight the fights we can win that are most important to Utah, our future, our health, and lets not worry about the things that are of less importance. If suitable storage is made for the DU at Envirocare’s site what is the issue?

DU or uranium 238 is an alpha emitter. Most everyone is not aware this same DU is used on board a number of Boeing 747’s as a counter balance or weight on ailerons since it is more than one and a half times heavier than lead. If you have flown on a 747 you have flown with DU. It is also used as a shielding material for the more aggressive beta particles in giving radiation treatments to cancer patients. Therefore since all of us have a friend or family member who has been treated with radiation or X-ray chances are the equipment used DU here in Utah. In the war of liberation of Kuwait DU shells knocked out Saddam’s Russian made tanks. Let’s face it, our military uses DU. It is an effective weapon against Russian armor. I guess my point is that it exists. Yes, I do not want it stored here in Utah any more than anyone else and Utah should not be the waste dump of the US, but we use it and it is around us.

Baylor College of Medicine provided this nice illustration of the relative energy of various radioactive particles and waves. Produced during alpha decay, an alpha particle is a fast moving helium nucleus. Alpha particles carry a charge of +2 and strongly interact with matter. They travel only a few inches through air and can easily be stopped with a sheet of paper. That’s right Utahans, a few inches of air or a single sheet of paper stops an alpha particle. If DU comes then lets make sure we tax the hell out of it and use those funds to provide, yes, more radiation treatment to those cancer victims without health care, support for education and to keep our infrastructure intact.

Lets work to keep higher levels of radiation from coming into our state. Fight what we can and remove the hysteria and ignorance around the storage of DU at Envirocare. The radiation hysteria of America in the 21st century is akin, in my mind, to the public discourse of witches in Salem, circa 1692.

A last question for HEAL I would like to know -- do members and supporters of HEAL have smoke detectors in their homes and apartments? Americium, a daughter product of the decay of deadly plutonium, has been the active agent in making smoke alarms work. It is an alpha emitter.

Democratic County Prosecutor Tough on Gangs To Speak...

Mark Saturday, July 11 on your calendar, this is the date all Davis and other Democrats will join with the Weber County Democrats for breakfast. We will meet at Golden Coral Buffet, 988 Washington Boulevard, Ogden. This is just north of 12th Street. The breakfast will begin at 9:00 am.

The featured guest speaker will be the new Weber County Attorney, Dee Smith. Dee was selected from a list of three candidates presented to the Weber County Commission by the Weber Democrats Central Committee to replace Judge Mark DeCaria. Dee has an impressive resume, with significant experience in criminal law as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney. He is a highly regarded member of the Weber Bar Association. Before attending law school, Dee served four years as a seminary teacher for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In a news article carried by the Deseret News the newly appointed county attorney intends to focus on the crimial activities of gangs and crime associated with them as well as putting away repeat offenders.

All Democrats regardless of the county you live in, as well as the general public are invited.

Stonewall Riots 40 Years Ago

The Stonewall riots occurred 40 years ago at an inn in Greenwich Village. They came about as a consequence of a police raid in the early morning hours on the bar. Because of this raid a number of violent demonstrations occurred subsequently around the city. It was a turning point for the lesbians and gays in America. For the first time groups came together seeking equality and protection and not persecution by the law. This police raid and their tactics are reminiscent of attacks on other groups in America by so called law enforcement. The story is a compelling one and worth reading about on Wiki.

Utah Gay Pride is sponsoring several events in the next few days to commemmorate the 40th annioversary of the Stonewall riots. Visit their website for a calendar of activities.

A Prom for All TONIGHT!

On the weekend of the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots the Unitarian Universalist Association will host “A Prom For All”, a free dance and celebration for people 14 and older. The prom is scheduled for Friday, June 26, 10:00 pm to midnight at the Marriott Grand Ballroom (75 South West Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah). The dance is free, but you must have a ticket to attend. Riots Accompany Democratic Convention...

Consider the electoral process here in Utah and the USA to the recent national election in Iran. Some of us can remember, at the height of the Viet Nam War, the riots in Chicago during the National Democratic Convention of 1968. I have friends who are Iranian and one of the wisest and brightest of the professors during my graduate school years was from Iran. His life was made difficult by the internal security police of the Shah. Then the mullahs came to power and life for him and his family was no better. Democracy and its exercise comes at a very high price at times, both here in the US and in the Middle East. Bush II and the Neocons of his administration believed western style democracy could be grafted into the Iraqi body politic, but that is at best uncertain, and at the least a work in progress. Several middle east experts observed when Saddam was captured, and photos taken of him emerging from his "spider hole", that it sent chills down the spines of a number of Muslim dictators in the region.

President Obama has to walk a tightrope here as he must avoid, as he said, being the "foil" for the Iranian religious leaders, and their puppet president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. By the way Ahmadinejad was one of the student organizers of the US embassy seizure. He has a blog and you can post comments there. He is also the guy who has denied the holocaust and called for the removal of the State of Israel from off the map.

Who can say whether the recent elections in Iran were rigged? Unfortunately Jimmy Carter was not allowed to be there to monitor their fairness as he has done in so many other elections around the world. The irony of Jimmy doing that I am sure is not lost on anyone. Iran and the US have some things in common and serious reasons for better relations. Outside of Israel the Iranian people have a higher regard for America and Americans than any mid eastern people. The mortal enemy of Shi'ite Iran are the Taliban of Afghanistan. There is a saying from that part of the world that the enemy of your enemy is your friend. Time will tell if the US and President Obama can steer a course to support democracy in Iran and or improve relations between our two countries.

Islam has a deep and rich tradition in its more than thousand year history. At the zenith of its creative apex, philosophers, scientists, mathematicians, astronomers, doctors, historians, poets, and authors excelled in their relative areas of study while the west struggled in the Dark Ages. The legacy of Islam in these areas is a formidable one. Not a single continent or people has not been influenced positively by the work of many classic Islamic scholars. Even the folks at BYU have begun the translation of Arab and Islamic texts making them available for modern scholars. Though a number of us in America resent Arabs and Muslims as they have control over our gas tanks, sponsor and support terrorism, threaten Israel, and have us bogged down in wars in far away places, let us not forget the stress associated with junior high math when we were introduced to algebra. It is from an Arab word "al-jabr , الجبر". And who is the father of modern algebra? Yes, he was a Persian Muslim.

In the centuries following the climax of Islamic civilization we have to ask as others have, what have the Arabs and Iranians done to Islam and conversely what has Islam done to the Arabs and the Persians? First, the Muslims blamed the Mongols for destroying their civilization in the 13th Century then they blamed the Europeans and the west. Now they blame the "great Satan" America and its client state of Israel for all of their woes. Focusing blame on the west and America in particular shifts the blame from so many failed despotic regimes, such as the current one in Iran, and just about everywhere else in the Middle East, to America. Unless these despotic dictators come to grips with the problems of their own countries and peoples the entire region will explode one day. In countering this the technology and the democratizing influence of the internet works to bring communication among peoples around the world just as this YouTube of political unrest is found so easily on the web. However, few 3G Iphones or laptops are found in refugee camps among the oppressed.

My heart goes out to the brave souls on the streets of Iran who are risking everything, their lives, their families, and fortunes for a chance at democracy and change.

And by the way, congratulations to Wayne Holland and the other recently elected Utah State Democratic Party leaders at a very peaceful state party convention.

The Republican Party is the New Donner Party...

Finally got around to reading some back editions of magazines around my house and ran across a fine article from Time Magazine. According to more than a few Washington observers and pundits the Republican Party has become the new Donner Party. I love it. Sorry Rob if this is not the highest road, but it is too funny and timely to pass upon. I especially liked the art work of the Grand Old Elephant sitting on the sidelines. I always liked elephants though. Too bad they are the mascot of the other guys.

An excerpt from the article: "These days, Republicans have the desperate aura of an endangered species. They lost Congress, then the White House; more recently, they lost a slam-dunk House election in a conservative New York district, then Senator Arlen Specter. Polls suggest that only one-fourth of the electorate considers itself Republican, that independents are trending Democratic and that as few as five states have solid Republican pluralities. And the electorate is getting less white, less rural, less Christian — in short, less demographically Republican."
